Objective
Following the earlier Symposium + Workshop for the University of Tokyo Faculty and Staff on Reflecting on Generative AI and Education held in December 2024, we will hold the second workshop on Reflecting on Generative AI and Education.
The previous event aimed to share our practices and impressions with one another through discussions in small breakout-room groups. This time, we aim the same overall goal, but will focus on more practical content, centering the format around talks in which faculty share their classroom practices.
First, Associate Professor Lui Yoshida (School of Engineering), who has organized and delivered talks and seminars on the use of generative AI for junior high and high school teachers and parents across Japan, will introduce the basics of generative AI as well as findings from research on its effects on learning. This will cover the basics for faculty who know little about how to use GenAI themselves, let alone how to let students use it, or which tools are available for UTokyo faculty/students.
Following that, faculty members who have incorporated generative AI into their courses (having students use it) will give presentations. We are currently soliciting faculty who would like to present.
Students use GenAI regardless of the attitude of instructors, so it is no longer an option for faculty to ignore it. AI has been capable of solving many of the basic assignments given at universities ever since ChatGPT was released to the public in late 2022, and this has become even more pronounced as the technology has advanced. What should instructors do then? Communicating with students and adapting evaluation methods are the basics. In a world where using AI for research and work is now assumed, we must consider what kind of education we should provide to students (this includes teaching about AI itself, but goes beyond it to what skills students should acquire in each field, and what they should be prompted to think about through their courses).
We look forward to the participation of many faculty members.
While the main purpose is information sharing and discussion among faculty, staff and students are also welcome.

Call for Presentations
We are soliciting presentations on, but not limited to, the following topics:
- Your own practices in using AI in teaching and education
- Research results on GenAI and education
- Changes in courses and students since the widespread adoption of generative AI (late 2022)
We welcome presentations that include perspectives such as:
- The AI-use policy you communicate to students (what uses are permitted or not permitted, and how this is expressed)
- Evaluation methods (reports, exams, oral presentations, attendance grades, etc., and how AI has changed these)
- Reflections and insights you would like to share based on your experience
- Requests to the university administration
